Clicks don't pay the bills: what to actually measure in a campaign
Ierònne ·
A campaign with lots of clicks and zero sales is one of the most frustrating situations in digital advertising, and also one of the most common when you measure what's easy to measure instead of what actually matters.
Clicks say something caught attention. They don't say whether that attention turned into anything of value for the business. The metrics that do matter are different:
-
Cost per conversion measures how much it costs you, on average, for someone to complete the action that actually matters (a purchase, a completed form, a booked appointment), not just a click.
-
ROI (Return on Investment) measures, for every dollar put into the campaign, how many dollars come back in real sales. A campaign can have a very low cost per click and still have a negative ROI if those clicks never convert into anything.
A simple example: if you spend $500 on a campaign, generate 1,000 clicks at $0.50 each, but only 2 people buy a $100 product each, your ROI is negative (you spent $500 to generate $200), even though the cost per click looked good on the surface.
If you're only looking at clicks or reach, it's time to switch your metrics dashboard to what actually connects to the business outcome.
