SaaS or custom development: how to decide without following the trend

Ierònne ·

Building your own software sounds like the more serious option, the "real business" move. But it isn't always the right call, and an honest recommendation sometimes means telling you that you don't need custom development yet.

The real question isn't which option is more impressive, it's which one solves the real problem faster and with less risk. If an existing SaaS already covers 80% of what you need, and that 80% is enough to run well, forcing a build from scratch just to have "something of your own" is usually a more expensive, slower decision with no real business reason behind it.

Custom development is worth it when your business process is genuinely different from what generic tools assume, when you need to connect several systems that no existing tool bridges well, or when volume already justifies the cost of maintaining your own build.

If you're not sure which of the two situations you're in, that uncertainty itself is a good sign it's not yet time for custom development. Once the limit of the generic tool is clear and specific, that's when the conversation changes.
