How long it actually takes to build an app

Ierònne ·

The honest answer to "how long does it take" always depends on the real scope of the project. But giving a concrete case, with documented timelines, is more useful than a generic number with no context.

FEM HOMI took 15 weeks to build a web platform plus a mobile app, split into two phases: first the WhatsApp support platform, then the full benefits app with an admin panel. That time included design, development, testing, and adjustments with the fund's team, not just the code.

What influences the real timeline the most isn't technical complexity itself, it's how many product decisions are settled from the start. A project where the scope shifts halfway through almost always takes longer than one with the same level of complexity but a scope defined from day one.

If you're planning a launch with a fixed date, the question worth asking isn't "how long does an app take in general", it's "how long does an app with this specific scope take, with this team, deciding this before we start".
