You don't need hundreds of users to validate your design

Ierònne ·

Before building a full product, it's normal to wonder if you need a mass survey to confirm the idea works. The answer, almost always, is no.

Testing with a small group (between 5 and 10 real users from your target audience) is usually enough to catch the most important problems in a design before you invest in building it. That's not an arbitrary rule: usability research has well documented that a sample that size already surfaces the vast majority of recurring usage problems. Adding more people to the same test starts returning the same findings over and over.

What does matter is that they're real users with the right profile, not friends or teammates who already know the product's context. A salesperson testing the app their own associates are going to use, for example, gives a far more honest read than a developer testing their own work.

Early validation with a small group doesn't replace broader market research if the project needs it. But to decide whether a design flow works before building it in full, you don't need to wait for hundreds of responses.
